  Our Teachers

Research suggests music and playing an instrument have enourmous benefits on the human brain. 'Music greatly assists in making sense of patterns when the development of right-brain activities, such as creativity, artistic expression, and musical intelligence, begins and heightens at the age of four' (Harris 2009, p.3). Piaget suggests that children's minds funtions through intrinsic cognitive structures where cognitive development progressed through certain age-appropriate developmental stages, based on different cognitive schemas. Additionally, Vygotsky (1978) suggested the social environment, the role and support played by educators assisted the development of thinking in the child. Although there are contrasting theories on how children learn, all would acknowledge that the child is an active learner with the ability to construct and organise material (Harris 2009, p. 2).
