Learning
My main aim of this activity is not only for the children to be able to identify musical elements but moreso to be able to share their thoughts and ideas about the piece of music. Carlina Rinaldi (2006) states 'that to truly listen to children we need to be "present". To be present means to be focused on what is happening right now' (Phillips, 2013). Additionally this is also supported by the Un convention on the Rights of the child, children need to be heard (Phillips, 2013). Further more this is linked to the Victorian Early Learning and Development Framework and its 5 learning outcomes, VELS Level 1: Prep (2011).
Ask the following questions to draw children into a piece of music;
What type of sounds do you hear (loud soft/dynamic, fast or slow /tempo)
How did this piece of music make you feel, what emotions were enlightened?
What would you name this piece of music if you were the composer?
What feelings do you think the composer wanted us to feel?
What do you think it was about?
Close your eyes, and imagine this piece of music being played. Choose a setting for this piece of music to be orchestrated, where would you think would be fitting?
Is it similar or different to pieces of music you have heard before?
Do you like this piece of music? If so why, or why not
What instruments did you see or hear playing?
